I was really excited about Katy Perry's " One Of The Boys". Katy Perry's Promotions Team did a phenomenal job of generating buzz to surround this record prior to it's release, and I bought into that buzz. I listened as Perez Hilton blogged about the new "it" girl, and followed Katy's video blog religiously waiting for her next t.v. spot or to see whatever else was going on with her career. I adored the video for "Ur So Gay" and because of that I was offered the opportunity to interview Katy for this site. That made me even MORE excited about this record prior to it's release.

I have never felt more let down by a record in my life. Wow. I think this was the most disappointed I've been in a record thus far this year. (Yes, even more so that Janet's "Discipline") The 2 best tracks are the 2 tracks that were released before the record dropped: "Ur So Gay" and "I Kissed a Girl". What's sad is, this girl is honest to god talented. She has an amazingly strong voice and presence...she just went the wrong direction with it. She went in a very Avril Lavigne kind of direction, and frankly that song and dance got tired by Avril's second release years ago.
Katy could do rock and roll, and do it well, but instead she chose a more "pop-rock" avenue that doesn't come across as genuine. I would love to hear Katy with do an unplugged version of "Thinking of You". That would be much more appealing and believable than the over produced album version. The same goes for "One of the Boys" which is vocally wonderful, but sorely over done on the album.
As far as the other songs on the record, they're all over the place. Some are more "dance-pop", while others are just "pop". It's like Katy and her production team just couldn't figure out what direction they wanted the record to go towards, or even more so...what Katy wanted her record to say. It honestly sounded like the preacher's daughter, who would make out with her best friend for attention, was talking a bit dirty here and there for the same reason. As a listener, it felt empty, and it left me empty. Here's hoping that Katy will grow into the songstress that I know is in there, and release another record that is more substantial next go round.
Download these tracks, they're the best of the record:

Also, a big congratulations to Miz Perry for having the #1 song in the nation this week! I Kissed A Girl knocked Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" off the top of the charts. Well done! Katy's album One Of The Boys
debuted on Billboards top 20 at #9. Way to go miss thing!! Who needs a promise ring when you've got the #1 single in America?! WORK!
No, not that ring silly! A promise ring. I know, that's so gay. I thought promise rings went out with, I don't know, high school. I'm curious, does a promise ring mean the same thing as a dude's high school ring? Does that mean he's your steady, or is it simply "I wanna be screwed by you, just you, and nobody else but you."? I really want to know. I know that fathers all over the nation give "promise rings" to their little flowers to make sure that they don't pop that bud before their wedding night, but I've always thought guys giving promise rings to their girl friends were just dumb. It's like "I know you want me to commit baby, and I do, I just don't want to commit to you that way yet. So, um...here's this ring that's REALLY SHINY that you can get all excited over and completely forget about bitching at me about wanting a commitment." Ugh, what a waste of a perfectly good piece of jewelry.
Apparently Katy Perry does not share my feelings about the promise ring, because she accepted one from her ("steady") boyfriend, lead singer of Gym Class Heroes, Travis McCoy. McCoy recently talked about Katy and the ring in an interview: "We're going to spend the whole summer together. She's going to be on Warped Tour with us, she's going to be performing. It's going to be a good time."
The two just kicked off the Warped Tour this past Friday in Pomona, California. They'll be traveling together for the next two months. Maybe the promise ring is he "promises not to eat all her food and use up all her toilet paper on tour, or he promises not to totally stink up her tour bus".
As for what he likes about Perry, he says, "She's super hot, for one. But when I first heard the song, I was like this is going to be a smash. The next thing you know it's No. 1 on iTunes." So, he also promises to ride her on coat tails while she's hot...or at least that's how it sounds if that's all he had to say about what he liked about Katy. Eek!
As for their relationship, it looks like McCoy bought her the diamond ring - but only as a "promise" - that she wears on her middle finger. He even adds "and I have one too!" His is a silver band with the name "Katy" engraved on it.
He continues, "I went in [the jewelry store] and said I wanted a ring. The lady behind the counter said 'here's one for $300.' I was like, 'I want a nice ring!' Then I pointed to the big one." McCoy adds he was "so scared to give it" to her, but luckily "she was so excited! And I'd set up flowers everywhere."
Well here's hoping that whatever the promise may be, that they're happy.

Katy Perry's new video for "I Kissed a Girl". Thoughts?!?
Katy Perry who we interview just a few days ago in an Exclusive JockBoy Interview is set to launch her new debut album One Of The Boys on June 17th. Here is her official Press Release and check back with us for a Divine Miss C review of Katy's Album.
April 8, 2008 -- Hollywood, CA -- No less a harbinger of 'what's hot' than Perez Hilton has predicted that L.A.-based singer/songwriter Katy Perry will be "one of the breakout stars of the summer" when Capitol Records releases her debut album, One of the Boys, on June 17th. Perry will also join the traveling rock circus that is the 2008 Vans Warped Tour, for the entire trek this summer. One of the Boys is a sharp and witty pop-rock gem filled with candid tales of neurotic ex-boyfriends ("Hot N Cold," "Ur So Gay", "Mannequin"), crazy road trips with friends ("Waking Up in Vegas"), and figuring out who you are along the way (first single "I Kissed A Girl," "Fingerprints"). While the album displays Perry's feisty, girl-power swagger, it also reveals her more vulnerable side on such regretful ballads as "Lost," "I'm Still Breathing," and "Thinking of You." "I think people can appreciate a songwriter who shows different sides, and this album has many different colors," Perry says. "I can write my share of angry break-up songs but I wanted to balance it out with fun, summertime songs. But there are also sad songs about loss and making the wrong decisions. It's been blood, sweat, and tears making this record. I've put everything into it and I feel like it's my baby. When people listen to it, I hope they will understand where I'm coming from as a person." To showcase her sharp, observational lyrics and big, charismatic voice, Perry worked with a host of noted producers and collaborators, including Greg Wells (Mika, Natasha Bedingfield), Glen Ballard (No Doubt, Alanis Morrisette), Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), Dr. Luke (Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne), Max Martin (Leona Lewis, Robyn), Sam Hollander & Dave Katz (Gym Class Heroes, Boys Like Girls) and Butch Walker (Pink, The Donnas). "You can't get better than these guys," Perry says. "I feel like the luckiest bitch in town right now." One of the Boys is the full-length follow-up to Perry's debut digital EP, Ur So Gay (available on iTunes since last November), which has already earned the 23-year-old Santa Barbara, CA, native a solid fanbase. Perry will perform "Ur So Gay," a hilarious kiss-off to a guyliner-wearing ex that Blender called "wickedly funny" and Billboard called "zeitgeist-capturing," on Last Call With Carson Daly on April 8th. The video for the clip, which premiered on MySpace had close to one million plays within one week of it being posted to the site. Perry has also been tapped for Yahoo!'s Who's Next Critical Eye and MSN's Ones to Watch for June. Perry will play a handful of live dates this spring on both coasts before heading out on the Vans Warped Tour. "Warped is going to be grueling and hot, but I'm ready to survive it -- even without showers," Perry says. "Gwen Stefani did the tour back in 2000 with No Doubt and she looked fabulous hopping around on stage in her little polka-dotted dresses. You can find YouTube clips of her up there and all the girls in the audience are going nuts. I'm am so channeling that." I had the amazing opportunity to conduct an interview with the lovely and talented Katy Perry. If you haven't heard of her, you should most definitely check her out at www.myspace.com/katyperry or at www.katyperry.com she is fantastic. I am anxiously anticipating her new album that is set to drop in late Spring...I will most definitely keep you all posted.
-I would like to say that I love your new song. The video for "Ur So Gay" was brilliant! I am really looking forward to hearing your album soon.
THANK YOU! :)
-When did you realize that you wanted to be a singer/songwriter?
Well, honestly it stemmed from competing with my older sister. Yes. She was 11 or 12 and I was 9 or something and I remember her coming home one day and talking about getting voice lessons and she had this karaoke tape she would practice to and I was pretty much forbidden to touch it... I of course touched it, stole it and practiced it on my own and performed it for my mom... she perked up and said, "maybe you should get voice lessons too!" That kinda started the whole thing. I then proceeded to sing "Oh Happy Day" a thousand times until I heard Killer Queen by Queen... and then it was all over.
-Did something happen that made it click or did you always just know?
I've always sang. Always. My mom to this day calls me a medley of bird characters, "Feather" "Bird" "Tweetheart" because I used to sing myself to sleep she said. I have always pursued music and nothing else. I studied Italian Opera in Santa Barbara when I was young, sang gospel and picked up a guitar at 13. I have nothing to fall back on... I never have, I might should've planned but I don't know what else I would do.
- I read that you are the product of 2 preachers, how did they feel about your decision to pursue music full time?
They love me and support me as their daughter. Obviously, I may not have turned into the poster child that they would have painted... but I am still a work in progress and they just want me to keep my clothes on and not do drugs. That's easy enough.
-I'm going to assume that 'Ur So Gay' is written about an ex. What's the story behind the song?
It's not about ONE ex in specific really... it's mostly just taking the piss outta the emo scene or just any guy who wears guy liner... they are pretty much subjected to this song. :) In general there's nothing wrong with being whatever you wanna be... but when my ex borrows my jeans and won't give them back... I draw the line... and write a song.
-How did you come up with the concept for the music video? Were the dolls custom made?
I had been thinking about doing a small time video just for the Internet and had lots of people submit their idea of treatments... but nothing hit me hard... and as a fan of all those kitch stupid videos on youtube I wanted something light hearted and fun that people would want to send to their friends as a "hee hee check it out type deal." So I was talking to a young up and coming director friend of mine, Walter May, and we started thinking and I just said, "I got it! Every girl has played with a ken doll at one time in their life and we all know he's NOT packing down there... we should do something with barbies!" Little girls grow up to be young women and have memories of our dolls and we all still giggle when we see a naked ken doll at a garage sale. hee hee. And NO these weren't custom made dolls, we used Jason Wu dolls which were FANTASTIC! The accessories these dolls came with were amazing... like tiny black american express cards. It was unreal. We did however build the sets from the ground up and even spray painted, died, wall papered and leather things... it was a project for sure. The label handed us a tinie tiny budget and we handed them back lemonade... (when life gives you lemons...)
-What is the biggest influence on you that affects your writing?
Lyrics and getting the story across, sometimes with a splash of sass and spot of humor. I don't know why I can write heart break songs easiest, I feel like I can write those in my sleep. I think maybe cause I'm a bit of a passive person in a relationship until it all builds up in my little mind and comes to a nasty head in a song... :)
-Does your upcoming album have a general theme?
Yes, awesomeness. And a general warning to my future boyfriends, don't fuck with my precious heart.
- Who's your favorite artist of the moment?
Robyn. Was on the same line up of her a couple weeks back at sxsw and she BLEW me away. What a FIERCE come back... who would've thought... show-me-love-Robyn...again? And that new Estelle track "American Boy" has me wanting to turn my prius in for a convertible. Of all time? QUEEN.
-Aside from music, what are you into?
I LOVE my cat, Kitty Purry. She is my rock in times of loneliness. I know that might sound silly... but she doesn't say anything... and just crawls into a little crevice I make with my arms and loves me unconditionally. Obsessed. I am that cat lady, damn. Check out www.cuteoverload.com if you EVER get depressed.
-What's one random/odd fact about you?
Well, I have OCD with cleaning and I think that is because of the main fact that I watch Mommie Dearest a lot and my uncle directed it... therefore the dysfunctional gene was passed on.
I love this song and I love this video. This just made my day for real. Here's Katy Perry's new video "Ur So Gay" I demand you guys all watch it right now. Thoughts?
