Alicia Keys - As I am [Album Review]

Mature, dignified, self confident, and talented. Ms. Keys’ 3^rd studio attempt is her best yet. Strong and consistent, yet with songs that defy superficial expression; Ms. Keys presents As I Am to her adoring fans.

Some songs give a taste of old school flavor, while others feel more soulful and of the moment. Whatever the mood, the record flows with a gracefulness that reminds us that Alicia Keys is not just a run of the mill R&B act, but a very talented force of nature with a voice that can evoke emotion and deserves respect.

“Teenage Love Affair” is playful with a retro tone as Keys takes on the role of a schoolgirl who plays around with her crush before sneaking back home. “Lesson Learned” features John Mayer both as backing vocals and guitar. It has Keys guiding a subtle melody with her piano while lamenting her heartache as a woman scorned yet gathering strength from a broken relationship. “No One” a powerful ballad with simple piano and synthesized hooks has Keys exclaiming her love and how “no one can get in the way of what I feel for you.” On it’s closing track “Sure Looks Good To Me”, Keys shows her full range of talent. With piano at the beginning, Keys sings in a voice that is aching, raw, and full of soul. The song evolves and takes shape with the sound of drums steadily rising as the mood of the song becomes more intense and Keys finally lets loose and wails “I’m gonna risk it all. No freedom, no fall.” Intense and direct in it’s delivery, this song summarizes the album’s foremost theme of self assurance.

As I Am takes it’s meaning. Keys has been raw, Keys has been heartbroken, Keys has been playful, Keys has been loved and has loved. Keys has truly discovered who she is at this moment, and how she came to be.
